After 2 1/2 days birding around Barrow, it was time to head back to Anchorage. Fog was pretty heavy during the morning around the airport but it was partly sunny in some of the outlying areas. Louis and I didn't do a whole lot of birding this morning prior to the flight but we did get to keep the truck an hour or so past turn-in time to get checked in at the airport and top off the tank. It cost us almost $109 to put 15+ gallons in the tank. We travelled 152-odd miles around the Barrow road system searching for and finding all sorts of birds on the tundra and near the Arctic Ocean / Chukchi Sea.
I inquired in the Alaska Airlines terminal if the flight was going to be on time and got a positive reassurance the plane had departed Deadhorse a while ago. When I went to turn the truck in I heard the familiar reverse-thrusting noise of a jetliner on the runway. Our airplane to Anchorage had landed and I was pleased to see a 737-800 in new Alaska Airlines paint. This would be my third flight in a row in a "next-generation" 737 wearing the new paint job...the 737-400s don't count. Maybe they'll paint some of them in the new paint but with so many new-build 737s joining the fleet I'm not convinced any of the -400s will be repainted.

During our soggy layover at Fairbanks I took the opportunity to deplane and wander around the terminal. A couple of other 737s were at the gates: A 737-200C (with gravel kit) of Canadian airline Air North and a 737-700 of Conoco Phillips.
There was also a display case with four preserved birds: Great Gray Owl, Gray Jay, Boreal Chickadee, and Yellow-billed Loon. I snapped a photo of them and once back onboard I showed the loon photo to Louis...it was one of the birds he'd hope to see in Barrow but didn't. He was understandably indifferent with my photo.
