My late-night flight to Denver meant a night in the airport waiting for my 5:33am flight departing to Charlotte. I wandered around A concourse for a while snapping photos of the Frontier and other planes present. I found a place to lay down near the departure gate A53. It was bright and not very comfortable napping on the floor but I tried to make the best of it. Before too long it was time to wake up and get ready to board my flight to Charlotte.
After arriving Charlotte I did something I've not done in a few years: left the airport in a rental car. I arranged to visit my brother Greg and sister-in-law Karen in Denver, NC about a half-hour from the airport. The weather was dismal but I easily found their house near Lake Norman. During our visit we went to Joey's for lunch. Greg and I went out in his truck looking for some birds at a couple of spots near Lake Norman but he assured me his backyard was suitable for birds despite the weather. We got back to his place and started early partying for New Year's Eve. He was right about the birds...he had some nice ones in the backyard despite the weather. Karen started preparing a turkey dinner for us. Meantime, after the bird was in the oven we went to my nephew AJ's house so I could see him and meet his girlfriend Tara.
It was a great way to spend New Year's Eve. Dinner was excellent and we got a little sloshed waiting for the ball to drop. Karen retired early while Greg and I waited up to watch the ball drop on the Dick Clark Rockin' New Year's Eve show. After that we stayed up talking for at least another hour - hour and a half. I needed to get at least a little nap before leaving to catch my flight but I was pretty wound up. I took a shower and then layed down in the spare room for a bit.
I was up at 4am and got ready to head back to the airport. Greg got up to see me off and I made my way back to the airport. Topped off the tank and got the car turned in no problem. TSA just opened so there was a little bit of a queue to get through security but once through I just wandered the concourses to snap some photos before settling down at the quiet end of D concourse for some quiet time before flight time.
