My first flight of 2020 is a positioning flight from PHX to SFO on the Sunday morning. During this trip, I'm hoping to fly transcon aboard an Alaska Airlines A321neo in full paint. Ten A321s are
in service with Alaska and two of them are in More To Love colors. I'd flown in a More To Love (N926VA) from LAX to SFO back in July 2018. In the mean time, Alaska has
repainted the previously-delivered Virgin America A321s into full Alaska colors, except for the two in More To Love colors. Alaska has taken delivery of three more
A321s making a total of 10 in service.
To that end, I booked the 8am departure from SFO to DCA hoping to score a flight aboard one of these A321s. I used Alaska miles for the trip and it was a very affordable
10k miles for the transcon flight. But with such an early departure I didn't want to risk not making the connection with the earliest departure from PHX on the Monday
morning so I decided to arrive a day early. This would give me the opportunity to bird/plane watch at Bayfront Park for the day, and what a glorious day it turned out
to be.
At any rate, I arrived PHX for my dawn departure with plenty of time to park and walk to the SkyTrain station in T3. The northside (American Airlines) security checkpoint
was less crowded so I used it. I strolled through the northside concourse to get in some steps, making it to the north end of the furthest concourse. I then doubled-back
and checked out the other end of the gate areas...seeing the 100th NG 737 for WestJet parked at the gate. It would later depart for Calgary.
