During my TDY to MCAS Miramar, I really wanted to visit Phoenix for my granddaughter's fourth birthday party. Thankfully, we
weren't scheduled to work over that weekend but that only became apparent on the Friday.
I'd already booked my flight to PHX before the TDY even began so I was really anticipating this trip. I used my first ever
ride-share (Lyft) to get to the airport by 400am. I was the very first person through TSA at the very small Southwest boarding
area covering gates 1, 1A, and 2.
The flight to PHX was good, my granddaughter's birthday party was great, and sleeping in my own house the Saturday night was nice, too.
Instead of flying back to San Diego I opted to get a one-way rental car and drive back on the Sunday. I'd have some time to see some trains
along I-8 and maybe do a little birding along the way.
The drive back was fun and uneventful, and I was back at the hotel by 3pm. I really needed a nap after arriving and I didn't get the
car turned in until nearly midnight. It wasn't due back until the next morning anyway, but I didn't really want to return it and get back
to the base in Monday morning commute traffic.
Oh, and this was my first ever flight on a February 29th!
