I had an epiphany on Valentine's Day that the 30th anniversary of the switchover from Stapleton to Denver International was just two short weeks away! Oh man...I gotta be there for this occasion, even if I'm the only one celebrating! Booked a short trip up on the 27th for return on the 28th. Originally I wasn't planning on renting a car...just hang in the airport.
So a week before the trip I'm uploading United Airlines photos to a FB group and I get a Messenger from one Sean Dirk asking for permission to use some of my Denver Stapleton photos for an upcoming event...a 30th Anniversary celebration and ATC panel at none other than the old Stapleton control tower on the 27th. What?!? Awesome!! He ask's if I'm planning on attending...I let him know I'll be at D.I.A. at the time and yes, I would be very grateful to attend this. So, pop on over to Enterprise and secure a car. I send a message to my buddy Paul in Denver mentioning all this and he agrees he'll be able to attend the control tower event as well. I'm also offered a place to sleep for the night with Paul's family. Wow...this is great!
During the week prior to the trip I also did out the cassette tape I have of the final ATC recording I made at Stapleton the night of 27 February 1995. Continental Airlines flight 34 to London Gatwick was the final flight out. Just prior to that was a Piper Malibu departing. I literally hadn't heard the recording in decades and I wanted to digitize it. A couple of years ago I'd tried to run it through a boombox but it started to bind so I tabled the idea. With the trip approaching, I found a local business that specializes in media transfer so I had them do it.
